A few Examples of our work in different Media

Relief Printmaking

Ian and Xu both have Fine Art  Degrees as well as  qualifications from other periods of their lives.

This is a lino print, one of the easiest types of printmaking.

Mezzotint Printmaking

Mezzotints are time consuming, but worth the effort

Traditional Chinese Watercolour

  • We work in several different  media.  Check the gallery of our photographs and prints.  We'll add more images as time passes.
  • Xu's traditional Chinese watercolours are exquisite.

Artist's Equipment

We love to create, anything.  This is our 14" etching press, which has been in use for over thirty years and used in numerous art education classes.

Our New Press

Our new 10 inch etching press, which now has its 4 inch top roller.

Screw type press for our relief prints

This small press uses  a carpenters  vice screw to print up to 8" x 8" relief prints.

Baby etching press from 1989

Baby etching press made from oak, highly portable, for printing small etchings and mezzotints.

1:3 scale Gutenberg type press

This is our next press project.  A 1:3 scalle Gutenberg style table top printing press.  Using the same vice screw for pressure as the small relief press. The main parts are cut ready on the bench.

1:3 scale Gutenberg type press

Well, here it is, a third scale press designed for table top use, based on a cross between a fifteenth century model that Gutenberg would have been familiar with and a slightly later Common Press.

The big difference is the screw, which is steel and has a much finer thread than the wooden screw of Gutenberg's day.  This means much less pull on the lever is required to apply pressure to the platen.  We'll be using this press to pull editions of  a number of relief prints that have been waiting.

The press was built for the most part from oak and ash that we had in the workshop, plus some pine and a little birch.  In some places modern adhesive and joining methods were used to make things easier to assemble and stronger.

Baby Gutenberg press

Most of the materials  for this  baby Gutenberg are ready to start building.
